The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, has been on and dominated by 3D televisions, partially due to the recent success of 3D movies like Avatar. Before too long it looks like 3D televisions may be making their way into living rooms around the planet which means that content producers and film makers will have a greater opportunity to distribute 3D content. In order to make 3D production more attainable, Panasonic have unveiled an integrated 3D camera, shown above. Of course, other ways of producing 3D content should be available soon.

News from RED Digital Cinema

There have been many developments from the RED camp as Scarlet and Epic inch closer and closer to release. In an announcement on October 30th RED outlined their rough release schedule and announced some impressive spec bumps like touch screen controlled focussing with facial detection for electronic RED, Nikon and Canon lenses as well as the recording of metadata from an internal three axis motion sensor and GPS receiver. On November 30th, it was confirmed that these features will be available on both Epic and Scarlet. Scarlet will now also shoot with increased data rates, now able to shoot up to REDCODE 100 and the new colour, gamma and sensitivity science as used in Epic will be implemented in the cameras.

Due to the increased features, the price has unfortunately also increased. The 2/3" Fixed package ready for shooting is now US$4750, an increase of $1000, and the 2/3" Cine interchangeable version is now $2750, up $250. The 8x Fixed zoom lens for the 2/3" Scarlet is finished and testing of the Mysterium-X sensor is well under way. First, a video of a crustacean called Snappy was released in 2K resolution, shot at ISO 800 by a RED One using the new sensor which looks amazingly clean.

Images taken at ISO 4000 followed this which are truly remarkable. A video of a colour chart lit by an iPhone shows just how good the sensor is performing even with unfinished firmware. This video can be downloaded from this forum post from Reduser.net.

Ted Schilowitz was spotted at CES a few days ago with a prototype of the 2/3" Interchangeable Scarlet and reporters from Engadget were able to grab photos of it from every possible angle as well as a rough interview with him about it.
The S35 Epic model is close to being tested by a select group of people and the all important release date for the 2/3" Scarlet models has tentatively been set for May/June 2010. I can't wait!
