"Scarlet" Announced at NAB

RED Digital Cinema promised that when they unveiled their pocket professional camera Scarlet that they would surprise everyone and they have certainly delivered.

I had originally reported that the camera would be 2K, a format a little bigger than HD but RED has announced that the camera will instead be 3K and retail, amazingly, for under $3000. And that's not all:

Specifications

• A brand new 2/3" CMOS sensor called MYSTERIUM X
• Frame rates of 1 to 120 fps, even 180 fps in burst mode
• Up to 100 MB/sec REDCODE recording to dual compact flash cards
• A fixed 8X T2.8 RED zoom lens
• A pricetag of less than $3000 US!

Camcorderinfo.com shot this video at the RED booth at NAB. The sound is a little distorted, but the video gives you a good look at this incredible new product.


When can you get your hands on a Scarlet? They've scheduled the release for "early 2009" but this is subject to change. They're not even taking orders yet as they did in the early stages of the RED One.
