More News of the RED Scarlet 3K Cinema Camera
It's an exciting time for those following the sub-$3000 Scarlet Digital Cinema Camera from RED. The team who are building the camera have been releasing details about the camera which give us a better idea about what the final product will be like when it is released in 'early 2009'. Jim Jannard, the owner of RED Digital Cinema, has stated that all the specs have been locked down. A prototype can't be too far away now.So, What's New?
The 3K camera will produce REDCODE RAW 3K files which, after debayering, will contain 2.1K measured resolution, perfect for 2K film prints and far more than enough for 1080P HD delivery. When the camera was announced at NAB, RED stated that the camera would be able to shoot 180 frames per second for a short 'burst' period of time. We have since learnt that that burst duration will be 5 seconds, producing more that thirty-seven seconds of slow motion on screen at 24 fps. It has also been revealed that the T2.8 zoom lens will maintain speed (the same aperture) throughout the zoom range. The lens, at 8x, will be equivalent to 28 - 244 mm in 35 mm still camera terms, wide and telephoto adaptors will be made available to extend the range. Iris and zoom controls will be on the back of the camera, and the lens will have a proper focus ring with distance markings and physical stops, as opposed to some electronic zoom rings which keep turning after the limit of the focal range has been reached. The body of Scarlet will be aluminium. We've also been told that you will be able to record for an hour with two 32 GB CompactFlash cards. The LCD will be huge at 4.8 inches and the camera will provide balanced audio.New Renders!
RED have also released renders of the camera in it's current production stage, these aren't photos of the camera but digital mock-ups of the computer-aided design process. You can find larger versions of these renders at the NAB Scarlet page on RED.com. There's also close up render of the controls on the back of the Scarlet which you won't find on RED.com but you will on Scarletuser.com.Permalink: http://productions.andrewgentle.com/news/more_news_of_the_red_scarlet_3k_cinema_camera/
