Canon Announces EOS 7D DSLR

Canon EOS 7D DSLR
Canon have today officially announced the EOS 7D DSLR. Confirming rumours which have been circulating for months, the EOS 7D features full HD movie mode in 24p (23.976), 25p and 30p (29.97) with manual exposure. It has a new 18 megapixel CMOS APS-C sized sensor with 14 bit dual Digic 4 processing and a burst mode of eight frames per second, up to a limit of 126 Large JPEGS using a UDMA CF card. The camera allows the connection of an external stereo mic for video recording and also has an inbuilt monaural one. The ISO range is 100 - 6400 but is stated to be "expandable" to 12 800. The DSLR, body only, will set you back $US1 699.

The Canon 5D mk II is the best "HDSLR" out there at the moment and produces stunning video with extremely shallow depth of field, especially in low light. Although the new 7D is a lower model than the full frame 5D, the addition of manual exposure, 24p (great for cinematic results) and 25p (great for anything destined for PAL regions) sets this new camera apart. The only other DSLR to currently offer 24p and 25p is the Panasonic GH1. It has been speculated that Canon may release firmware upgrades for the more expensive 5D to enable 24/25p recording so as not to undermine the more expensive model. Hopefully the image quality of this camera lives up to the 5D.

Digital Photography Review have a first look hands on with the new camera.

Update Gizmodo also have a hands on and they've posted two sample videos on Vimeo as well.
